Physical characteristics: The back shell of the American Smooth Softshell Turtle is oval-shaped and smooth. The color of the shell ranges from dark to olive green to brown. Female turtles tend to be darker in color than males. There are brown or black spots or stripes on top of the shell. The belly is white.
