The body of an adult is oval and flat on both sides. The head is small, with a prominent forehead and a small mouth. There are rows of flat teeth on both jaws that cannot be moved. The edges have serrations; the dorsal fin and anal fin have sharp spines; all fins are not elongated; the pectoral fin is triangular in shape; the tail fin is crescent-shaped with upper and lower rays gradually extending into filamentous structures as it grows.
