Physical characteristics: The back shell of the American Smooth Softshell Turtle is oval in shape with a smooth front edge. The color of the shell ranges from dark to olive to brown and can vary between individuals. Females tend to have a darker color while males are lighter gray. There are brown or black spots or stripes on top and white belly shells.
